Akatsuki - a criminal organization led by highly dangerous S-ranked or higher level ninja. The top of Akatsuki is usually dominated by ten of the most powerful ninjas in the organization. There are also numerous suboordinates working for Akatsuki as well as sleeper agents inside various ninja villages. Akatsuki's goal is to force all the ninja villages into submission and achieve world domination. For that they need to accumlate large sums of money, mostly through underground criminal activities. The money will be used to field a vast army of mercenary ninja that will take on any mission at lower costs compared to all the ninja villages. This will force the hidden villages to crumble due to lack of funding, and all the countries will have to depend on Akatsuki. Akatsuki is also in the process of collecting the nine tailed beasts and sealing them. The purpose is to harness the beasts' powers and use them to start wars in countries. The symbol for Akatsuki is a red cloud over a black background.
Amaterasu - is the name of the goddess of the sun in the Shinto religion. It is the name of a ninjutsu Itachi can perform while using the Mangekyou Sharigan. Amaterasu creates jets of black colored flames that are said to be as hot as the sun and can literally burn through anything.
Amegakure - is the proper name for the Hidden Village in the Rain, a shinobi village located in the Land of Rain. The village symbol is a series of four parallel vertical lines.
ANBU - short for Ansatsu Senjutsu Tokushu Butai, which translates as "special assassination squad." They are the elite "black-ops" of a shinobi village and are under the direct command of the Kage. ANBU members are usually highly skilled ninja with special abilities that allow them to perform high level missions such as assassination. When in operation, ANBU members wear porcelain masks to hide their identity and carry a ninjaken (ninja short sword).
Baa-san - Japanese honorific attached to the end of a name. It is normally used to address older women or grandmothers. Naruto is the only one to refer to Tsunade as Tsuande baa-san (or granny Tsunade) and can get away with it.
Bijuu - or tailed beasts are legendary demon beasts which possess near infinite amounts of chakra and power. There are nine bijuu in all, each resembling an animal. The most distinctive feature of a bijuu is its number of tails. It is said a bijuu's power is proportional to the number of tails it has; this makes Naruto's Kyuubi with nine tails the most powerful.
Bloodline Limit - A rare trait one is born with which is usually activated either from time of birth or at a young age. Bloodline abilities can take the form of an eye technique such as the Sharigan or Byakugan, or physical body manipulation such as being able to manipulate one's own bone structure. It can also be an ability to manipulate multiple chakra elements at once to create 'new' elements such as Ice, Wood, or Sand. Bloodline abilities are very rare and usually exclusive to a clan, and are only passed down through the generations. They are highly valued by shinobi villages and are carefully guarded secrets.
Bunshin - a clone or copy created by a ninja to distract and/or confuse the enemy. Unlike Kage Bunshins (Shadow Clones), regular clones are just illusions and cannot perform physical tasks.
Byakugan - translated as "White Eye", is a bloodline limit ability unique to the Hyuga clan of Konoha. It has a very distinct appearance where the eyes are white colored and pupil-less. It is believed the Sharigan originated from the Byakugan. Unlike the Sharigan, the pupil effect of the Byakugan affects those of the Hyuga clan continuously. The Byakugan is a powerful sight ability which allows the user to detect motion, chakra, even temperature changes, over a radius of hundreds of meters around him. This makes Byakugan users excellent scouts and trackers, as well as expert hand-to-hand combatants. The Byakugan's ability to view the chakra channels in the human body is especially deadly. A skilled user can aim his attacks directly at vital chakra points in the body to completely stunt an opponent's chakra flow, thereby preventing him from performing any jutsus.
Carrier Nin - are specialized ninja who transport packages from Point A to Point B with their lives on the line. Once they receive a mission to deliver something, no matter how absurd the task is, they will deliver the package. They are represented by numbers rather than names. When they need help to transport a package because they are in danger, carrier ninja can signal many of their own to help the fend off their enemies. These ninja are usually trained for speed so they deliver the package as soon as possible.
Chakra - the basic energy used to perform techniques such as ninjutsu or genjutsu. Chakra is formed from a mixture of spiritual and physical energies and be used to power an ability or expelled in a form that can used to attack. The amount of chakra a person has varies but the important point is not how much a person has but how well he can control and manipulate it. Depleted chakra will be recharged after resting, but completely depleting one's chakra reserves will endanger that person's life.
The nature of chakra: There are five primary natures of chakra: Fire, Wind, Water, Lightning and Earth. This is important because during a battle a jutsu can be affected by the opposing nature of chakra. This is a circular relationship where one chakra element is always advantageous over one element but disadvantageous against another. The order is thus: Fire > Wind > Lightning > Earth > Water > Fire, which returns us to Fire in a circular relationship. For example Naruto's Rasengan is a wind element justu and will be strong against a lighning based jutsu like Sasuke's Chidori. On the other hand, against a fireball justu at the same level, the Rasengan would only increase the power of fireball. Combining different natures of chakra can result in a stronger attack combination, for example combining fire and wind would amplify the fire attack. A shinobi usually starts with one nature of chakra, but can learn to manipulate other chakra elements as he advances in skill. It is also shown in the series that certain bloodline limit abilities allowed different element chakra to be combined to create new element types. By combining water and wind chakra, Haku was able to use ice justus; also, Yamato can combine earth and water chakra to use wood based justus. These abilities are generally rare and limited to special bloodlines.
Chan - Japanese honorific attached to the end of a name. An informal honorific usually applied to young children (especially girls), pets, and nicknames. It's often used to make the name sound cute or used between close friends; example: Naruto often refers to Sakura as Sakura-chan.
Chuunin (Chunin) - A chunin is the second level of shinobi ranking. A genin can advance to the chuunin rank by passing the chuunin exam. Unlike genins, who accomplish missions which are C-Rrank and below, chunins can take on missions from A or B- ranks. They normally have gained an average of 5 justus.

G-I Genin - is the first and lowest rank of shinobi, and signifies that the individual has completed his training from a Ninja Academy. Though sometimes there are certain tasks or tests to be completed before one is allowed to graduate. On average, genin usually have a repertoire of three jutsus. They are normally assigned into a team comprised of three genin and a jonin instructor. Normal genin are only allowed to be given C-Rank or lower level missions.
Genjutsu - are illusionary techniques which manipulates the target's senses in order to create illusions. Genjutsu are accomplished by controlling the target's chakra flow, specifically those in his nervous system. In effect, genjutsu uses a person's own chakra against him, but the genjutsu user also consumes his own chakra to maintain the control. Ninja with high intelligence are best suited at using genjutsu and are more resistant to its effects.
Hand Seals - are specific hand patterns used by ninja as a way to manipulate and combine spiritual and physical energies with chakra nature composition in order to perform jutsus. Officially, there are twelve hand seal patterns, each named after an animal in the Chinese zodiac. Each animal/seal also signifies a specific element, for example the tiger seal = fire, dog = earth, bird = wind, horse = sound. However, there are also some ninja use rare and unusual seals to activate their jutsus; one example is Naruto's seal for activating 'Kage Bunshin no Jutsu.' Hand seals are typically performed using both hands, but specially trained ninja can perform seals with only one hand; Haku was revealed to possess this skill when he fought Sasuke Uchiha. Higher level techniques require more hand seal combinations to activate. The last seal formed in a combo usually denotes the elemental attack type of the jutsu and therefore the chakra type of the user. High level ninja can perform hand seals so fast that the normal eye cannot read each individual seal, but ninja with special abilities such as the Sharingan can decipher them.
Henge - translates as transformation. Henge usually refers to transformation jutsus where the user alters their form either physically or through illusionary techniques.
Hitai-ite- the actual term for the ninja headband / forehead protector
Hokage - translates as 'Fire Shadow'; is the Kage (leader) of the Hidden Village in the Leaf.
Icha Icha Paradaisu - 'Make Out Paradise' is one of a series of adult novels written by Jiraiya. It's apparently quite popular and has gained Jiraiya a substantial profit from sales. Kakashi is known to be an avid fan of the books and is often seen reading it during his spare time.

Jonin (Jounin) - is the third level of shinobi ranking after chunin. Shinobi are only given the Jonin rank if they have gained a wide range of techniques as well as battle experience and knowledge. Also, most Jonin are capable of manipulating at least two different types of chakra elements. Jonin are a ninja village's most dependable shinobi and are given the most dangerous missions. Kage Bunshin - or Shadow Clone is an advanced form of the regular cloning technique where the clone is actually a duplicate body of the original. However this technique also requires substantial amount of chakra since the orginal shinobi's chakra needs to be evenly split amongst all clones in order to sustain them. A Shadow Clone is released (destroyed) when it receives damage, but all the experience it gained during its existence is returned to the original.
Karuso - The name of Kankuro's Puppet that he used in the Chuunin exams. It literally means "Crow."

Kouhai - Formal Japanese honorific used for a colleague who is a junior. Normally, the person would be addressed with the 'kun' honorific since addressing someone as just 'kouhai' would be rude; example: Yamato is a kouhai to Kakashi, so Kakashi would refer to him as Yamato-kun or just Yamato. The reverse of kouhai is senpai.

Kunai - are dagger-sized weapons that are common to almost any ninja's arsenal. Most kunai are made from iron with a sharpened trowel-shaped blade and bandages wrapping the handle to increase the grip. The small loop at the blunt end of the kunai can be utilized in many ways by resourceful ninja such as threading wire through in order to make a trigger trap.
Kunoichi - is a female ninja.
Kusanagi - The sword that Orochimaru often wields. It literally means "Grass Cutter."
Kyuubi - the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox which had been sealed by Konoha's Fourth Hokage inside Naruto. Kyuubi's physical form is that of a red/orange fox with nine tails.
Mangekyo Sharingan - or Kaleidoscope Sharingan, is the ultimate evolution of the Sharingan revealed so far in the series. The eye pupil takes on a different appearance than the regular Sharingan but can vary between users. The new abilities the Mangekyo Sharingan can differ between different users but some of the most dangerous ones are related to the warping of time and space. However, the cost for using the Mangekyo Sharingan is that it gradually deteriorates the user's eyesight.
Medical Nin - are ninja who specialize in both the knowledge of the human body and medicines. They practice medical jutsus that can be used to heal allies, but are also effective in combat to damage their enemies. Medical ninjutsu attacks can be especially dangerous as they can cause permanent internal injuries. However, on most teams the medical ninja is not a frontline combatant. During a fight the medical ninja's priority is to avoid damage at all cost because they are considered a key member to their squad. If the medical ninja is injured, then he will not be able to heal himself nor his teammates. Kabuto, Shizune, Tsunade, and Sakura are examples of well known medical ninja in the Naruto series for their medical knowledge and the techniques they use. An important quality that good medical ninja possess is having perfect chakra control.
Mizukage - translates as 'Water Shadow'; is the Kage (leader) of the Hidden Village in the Mist.

N-P Naruto - According to Wikipedia: Naruto can mean "maelstrom," and is also the name for a sliced stick of Kamaboko with a pink whirlpool design in the middle that is used as a topping for Ramen (Naruto's favorite food). The surname "Uzumaki" is a pun on "spiral", while "Uzumaki" refers to a three-dimensional spiral, like a whirlpool or vortex. A more accurate translation for spiral would be "Rasen." The Konoha leaf symbol is drawn with an arrow attached to a spiral, part of the seal on his abdomen is a spiral, the symbol on the back of his jacket and shoulders is a spiral, and one of his attacks is Rasengan, which means "Spiraling Sphere."
Ninjutsu - are ninja techniques that cover a broad range of attacks and abilities. However, unlike genjustu, ninjutsu are real and cause direct physical effects. Performing ninjutsu requires chakra and are usually (but not always) activated by performing the correct sequence of hand seals. Ninja with large chakra reserves and skilled at performing hand seals are best suited at using ninjutsu.
Ninpo - another word for Ninjutsu.

Their puppets are often equipped with weapons and loaded with traps and poisons. As the skill of a puppeteer ninja increases, so does the number of puppets he can control simultaneously. Puppeteers devote most of their time to creating and fine tuning their puppets, so they are generally weak in hand-to-hand fighting. So far in the Naruto series, puppet jutsu seems to be a technique unique to the Hidden Village in the Sand.

This eye technique allows the ninja to use all techniques and manipulate all chakra elements. Pein is the first character seen in the series to use the Rinnegan in combat. So far, the ultimate form of the Sharigan has been the Mangekyo Sharingan, which is highly difficult to obtain but grants the user powerful new abilities. The Sharingan also appears to be transplantable as this was how Kakashi gained his. However, Kakashi's non-Uchiha body is not compatible with his Sharingan eye, so using the ability exhausts him rapidly.
Shinobi - is another word for ninja.

U-Y Uchiha - at one point the most powerful clan in Konoha and founders of the Konoha Police.
