It was summer time, a time where the mice were plentiful, a time when patience to catch such mice was called for. A soft squeak entered Soulpaw's ears and he dropped down to crouch, keeping his eyes on the mouse hole. He was tucked under a tangle of roots, out of sight and out of mind, dressed in the shadows. The hole filled with small, grey mice was two tail-lengths away, leaving enough room for any of the mice to emerge and sniff around a bit and enough room for a quick leap. Soulpaw shifted his weight, the scuttling growing louder and louder. Anticipation filled him, his lips curling back and his mouth watering. He was hungry. "Soulpaw, what in StarClan are you doing?" A heavy set of paws shoved Soulpaw into the dirt beneath the overgrown tree roots, teeth nipped at his ears, and claws dug into the spot between his shoulders. He let out a shrill yowl, dust and plant matter get stuck in his mouth. It was Dawnstar, he knew, his mentor. And by the looks of it, the huge, oddly-colored cat knew how hungry Soulpaw was.
